Big Eph-ing cookie: How do we name our food?

Dining hall meals are a mouthful — and not just literally. Whether students are grabbing a plate of lava lava shrimp, a fungus among us burger, or a wet beef burrito, the names of menu items are often as intricate as the dishes themselves.
Although roughly 50 percent of students at the College identify as female, women consistently make up just 30 percent of all economics majors at the College. This data comes from the economics department 2023 internal report.

Gender gap in economics department persists despite faculty interventions

The economics department has a longstanding gender imbalance among students, according to the department’s internal data. The department’s most recent report from 2023 revealed that, at the time, 36 percent of economics majors were female. According to members of the department, the number of female students has remained stagnant over the last decade. Faculty are aware of this trend and are working to increase the proportion of female economics majors.

CSS unveils unified emergency preparedness initiative

This spring, Campus Safety Services (CSS) will roll out its new Purple Shield initiative, Associate CSS Director and Director of Emergency Management Amalio Jusino wrote in an email to the campus community last Thursday. The program, which aims to standardize emergency preparedness on campus, relies on the national Standard Response Protocol created by the “I Love U Guys” Foundation.

Dean of the Faculty to serve second term

Professor of Economics Lara Shore-Sheppard will serve a second term as dean of the faculty, President Maud S. Mandel announced in a Jan. 29 email to the College. Shore-Sheppard’s second term will begin on July 1, 2026, and continue through June 30, 2029.

Urgent care facility opens in Town

A new urgent care facility operated by Berkshire Health Services opened on Adams Road in Williamstown in late December, following the closure of North Adams Urgent Care last August. The new facility addresses the need for health care in the rural community and provides a nearby option for College students.
