Chess Club returns to tournament play, wins at Bennington

The College’s Chess Club competed in the first in-person competition that the club has attended since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. For many club members, this was their first in-person chess tournament and their first rated competition.

An inside look: What goes into a home weekend?

This past weekend, seven of the College’s fall varsity teams — men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, football, field hockey, men’s and women’s cross country — and two of the College’s club ultimate frisbee teams all competed at home. Hosting this many sporting events was no easy feat: Executing a home weekend requires hours of planning from a wide range of Operations & Maintenance staff, as well as administrators in the athletic department.

Men’s cross country sweeps at Purple Valley Classic

Against a scenic backdrop of fall foliage and panoramic mountain views, the men’s cross country team raced to victory at the Purple Valley Classic Meet this weekend. The Ephs swept the top ten places in the 8k race, earning a perfect score of 15 points and first place.
The volleyball team is now 4-1 in the NESCAC and 7-3 for the season.

Ultimate frisbee athletes improve skills, find community while playing for semi-pro club teams over the summer

For most club sport athletes at the College, the end of the academic year also brings the end of their ability to practice and compete with a team. Yet for some students on Nova and the Williams Ultimate Frisbee Organization (WUFO) — the College’s ultimate frisbee teams — this summer gave them the opportunity to play frisbee at an even higher level on club teams not affiliated with the College.

Three days before the start of the academic year, the captains of varsity athletic teams arrived on campus for a training hosted by the athletic department. Captains’ training — much like the end-of-summer training for Junior Advisors, House Coordinators, and Ephventure leaders — seeks to prepare a new group of students for their leadership roles.

Frankie Stola ’21.5 kicks off professional football career in German league

For most athletes at the College, their senior season brings an end to their competitive playing career. However, for Frankie Stola ʼ21.5, graduation signaled the beginning of a professional career, albeit in a very different environment than Williamstown. Stola, a former receiver for the football team who holds six career and single-season receiving records, recently signed a season-long contract in April to play and coach for the Cottbus Crayfish American Football Club in Cottbus, Germany.
