Students were harassed by an individual in a white pickup truck on Hoxsey Street in the early morning of Sunday, Nov. 2.
The driver of the truck shouted racial slurs and threatened students with physical harm, according to an all-campus email from Director of Campus Safety Services (CSS) Jeff Palmer and Vice President for Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leticia S. E. Haynes.
According to the email, the truck was a four-door pickup with Massachusetts plates. Palmer confirmed in the email that the Williamstown Police Department (WPD) is investigating the incident.
The incident was reported by a student who took a photo of the pickup truck as it drove down Hoxsey, according to the email.
Palmer condemned the incident and expressed gratitude to the campus community for their help in reporting it. “We thank the student who contacted us about this incident and to remind everyone that hateful actions like these have no place here,” he wrote.
Palmer added that resources are available for affected students. “For anyone needing additional support, our colleagues in the Davis Center and [Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion] are available to meet and connect you with other resources,” he wrote.
The email also requests that any students with knowledge about the incident reach out to CSS or the WPD. “We are asking anyone with information about the vehicle below to contact Campus Safety Services at 413-597-4444 or the Williamstown Police Department at 413-458-5733,” he wrote.
The incident follows three incidents of racial harassment announced by Palmer earlier this year. In response to those incidents, CSS increased its presence along Route 2.
