The Gargoyles: The College’s century-old, somewhat-secret society

Since its founding in 1895, the Gargoyle Society has been an active force in representing the student body and improving the student experience at the College. While the existence of the honors society composed of juniors and seniors is not technically secret, the society keeps the details of its regular operations private.

For the past five years, Kim Gutschow, a senior lecturer in religion, anthropology, and sociology, has taught a tutorial called “Mindfulness Examined.” In pairs, its students explore the benefits that mindfulness provides through in-class meditation and weekly readings.

Last year, the College announced that House Coordinators (HCs) would be paid for their work. Although there are no new responsibilities for the HCs this year, the addition of compensation has changed the nature of the position.
