A former Wesleyan first-year, Samuel Vuvu Schumann, was arrested on April 6 with 31 counts of voyeurism for allegedly secretly recording 19 female students in dormitory bathrooms over a two-month period. In a separate incident, the Amherst College Police Department (ACPD) announced last Tuesday that a camera was found in a Science Center bathroom. The search to identify the perpetrator remains ongoing.
These incidents follow a similar case at the College. Last March, student Maxwell Hall was charged with 18 counts of photographing an unsuspecting nude person in an Upper Lasell Fitness Center bathroom. Hall’s jury trial has been rescheduled for Jan. 11, according to online case records.
Schumann, a freshman on the Wesleyan men’s soccer team, had been on campus for only a few weeks before female students reported concerns to Wesleyan Public Safety and the Middletown Police Department in late October 2025, after which he was removed from campus.
One student reported Schumann for looking through gaps in a shower stall as she bathed. Another said someone put an iPhone over the shower barrier, appearing to record her.
After obtaining a search warrant, the police reportedly recovered at least 95 videos recorded by Schumann. Investigators said the recordings showed women showering and using bathrooms in Nicolson Dormitory, where Schumann lived, between Sept. 9 and Oct. 27, 2025.
Middletown police obtained an arrest warrant for Schumann on Feb. 6, but said it took two months to locate him because he was not on campus. Authorities ultimately coordinated with Schumann for him to turn himself in, officials said.
In an April 7 email to the Wesleyan community, which was obtained by the Record, Vice President for Student Affairs Mike Whaley described the incident as “a disturbing breach of trust.” The university confirmed that Schumann was identified last semester, immediately removed from campus, and will not be returning.
At Amherst, ACPD emailed the Amherst community on April 14 stating that they received a report that a camera was hidden in a Science Center bathroom. The camera was confiscated, and authorities searched other bathrooms in the building and reported that no additional devices were found. The investigation remains ongoing as ACPD works to identify the individual responsible.
