Statistics to become independent academic department following faculty vote

Faculty voted overwhelmingly in favor of a proposal to create independent statistics and mathematics departments at the faculty meeting on Nov. 6. As a result, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics will split on July 1.

Women’s cross country triumphs over Amherst at NESCACs by 52-point margin

Women’s cross country took first place with a score of 35 points at the NESCAC championships on Saturday, marking the Ephs’ fifth consecutive year as NESCAC champions. Their 52-point victory over the second-place Amherst Mammoths, who scored 87 points, is the largest winning margin the race has seen in 20 years.

Field hockey gears up for NESCACs after stellar regular season

Field hockey has seen just two regular season losses and a record-breaking season for head coach Alix Barrale ’93. The Ephs added a 4-1 win to that record this past weekend in a match against the Connecticut College Camels but fell to the Middlebury Panthers last night.

Men’s soccer sweeps doubleheader with shutouts at home

Men’s soccer (8-2-1, 5-20-0 NESCAC) dominated over the weekend, defeating the Bates Bobcats (6-4-1, 2-3-1 NESCAC) 2-0 on Saturday and the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons (7-3-3) 1-0 on Sunday. The weekend’s victories brought the team to four consecutive wins, solidifying its strength after an uneven start to the season.

No. 18 women’s cross country snagged first place during its final home meet of the season, the Purple Valley Classic at Mount Greylock Regional High School on Sept. 21. The team finished just one point ahead of runner-up RPI.

Rower Ben Washburne ’23 takes silver at Paralympics

Washburne found great success at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, earning a silver medal in the Mixed PR3 Coxed Four event. After qualifying for the Games at the 2023 World Rowing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, Washburne spent the last year in Cambridge, Mass., pursuing a high-intensity training plan and working at Intersect Power, a green energy company.

The men’s squash team (13-5, 8-0 NESCAC) and women’s squash team (11-7, 7-1 NESCAC) both won the Little Three Championship, which took place from Jan. 27–-Jan. 28, beating both Wesleyan and Amherst.
The Ephs will play the Tufts Jumbos on Friday for their first of two NESCAC matchups this weekend.
