Orthodox Jewish student files federal religious discrimination complaint against the College

A legal nonprofit filed a federal civil rights complaint against the College this morning on behalf of an anonymous first-year Orthodox Jewish student. The complaint, filed with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, alleges that the College discriminated against the student due to his religion in violation of Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, also known as the Fair Housing Act.
Orthodox Shabbat services are currently being held in Perry.

Chabad house to open in Williamstown

 A Chabad religious center is opening in Williamstown this fall, providing Orthodox religious services for Jewish students and other community members. The center’s leaders Rabbi Mendel Volovik and his wife Tzivia Volovik will conduct services separately from the Williams College Jewish Association (WCJA) in the new center.

College not to hire new Italian professor, discontinuing program

The College’s Committee on Appointments and Promotions (CAP) decided against hiring an Italian professor for the 2025–26 academic year, effectively rendering students unable to study Italian at the College. The decision prompted outcry from several students currently or previously enrolled in Italian courses, who will now have to enroll in an Italian course at MCLA through the Williams/Bennington/MCLA Cross-Enrollment Program if they would like to continue their study of the language.
