Women’s golf secured a first place finish in the 15-team field at the Martin and Wallace Invitational hosted by SUNY Cortland last Sunday. Due to heavy rain, high winds, and the resultant flooding of the course, the first round of the invitational was canceled, reducing the tournament to a shortened 18-hole format from its original 36-hole format.
Despite the conditions, the Ephs persevered and shot a team total of 297, +9, beating Amherst by five shots and securing the top finish. After the tournament, the Ephs sit in fifth place out of six teams in the NCAA Div. III East Region.
Euna Lee ’26 said that the invitational’s poor weather conditions was a motivator for the team. “We all were in the mindset of ‘We should prove ourselves and how much work we’ve done over the winter preseason,’” she told the Record.
Emma Abramson ’27, who led the team on the individual side, placed fourth with a triumphant 73, +1, finishing two strokes behind winner Nalinda Wanikpun of New York University, who scored 71, -1. Abramson’s four birdies during her round contributed to her low stroke score, helping the Ephs take the lead. Victoria Kim ’26 followed suit in fifth place with a strong 74, +2 score, with Lee and co-captain Gio Kim ’25 following close behind, both with scores of 75, +3, to tie for ninth place. Tianyi Zhuang ’24 placed 16th with a solid 76, +4 score, and Natalie Cheong ’27 scored 77, +5 in the individual round to place 18th overall.
Lee explained that the team analyzed the course hole-byhole ahead of time, noting for first-year members the elements of the course to consider before play started. “Going over with them — [giving] advice on some holes or looking at the course — visually helped them understand what to look out for and be aware of,” she said.
Co-captain Aishvarya Bedi ’24 described her excitement at the team’s track record so far this season. “Performance-wise, I think we’re on a really good path,” she told the Record. “We started the spring No. 1 in the country, which was a huge deal and a great accomplishment and something that the whole team was really proud of. Everyone really contributed to that ranking and made that possible.”
The Ephs will compete next weekend at the Amherst Invitational, hosted at the Orchards Golf Course in South Hadley, Mass., on April 20 and 21 to close out the regular season. Next, they’ll compete at the NESCAC Championship hosted at home at the Taconic Golf Course on May 4 and 5.
