Dear readers,
Thank you for picking up our first edition of the semester! I hope you’ll keep up the habit.
Every week, we find out what’s happening in our community and write it down. That’s the very simple task of the Record, one we hope to undertake with rigor, integrity, fairness, and creativity. Our paper exists to offer the campus community, particularly the student body, a clear and accurate set of facts.
It’s gotten harder to be a student journalist lately. It’s gotten harder to be a student. Our world — from federal laws to campus policies to student protest movements — keeps changing, faster and faster. International students and students of color rightly worry about their safety and wellbeing.
We promise to do our part by remaining attentive and adaptable. We’ll figure out what questions to ask and diligently pursue the answers. We’ll read the fine print, double- and triple-check our articles, and listen closely when you speak with us. If you ever feel like we’re off the mark, please let us know.
Think this all sounds worthwhile? You can write to us, or write for us. Send an email to [email protected] with a news tip, or submit an op-ed, or join our reporting staff — the application, linked on our website, is due Friday night.
If you’ve never written for a newspaper before, that just means you might be bringing a new, underrepresented perspective to our paper. We’d love to have you.
Sincerely,
Haley Zimmerman,
Editor-in-Chief
