A water main break on Route 7 left residential buildings in Greylock Quad without running water on Wednesday and closed a portion of the road.
Senior Associate Dean of Campus Life Doug Schiazza asked students not to use restrooms in the affected buildings, directing them towards functional restrooms in the decommissioned Greylock Dining Hall and the ’62 Center for Theatre and Dance. “I realize the timing for this is awful, and I’m so sorry for the impact it may have on you,” he wrote in an email to the student body.
In a follow-up email a couple hours later, Schiazza informed students that the College’s water supply had been restored. As of publication, Route 7 remains largely closed between the Field Park Traffic Circle and Sand Spring Road.
The ’62 Center was also affected by the water main break, though earlier in the day. According to Assistant to the Associate Vice President and Administrative Coordinator Kim Racine, the ’62 Center lacked usable restroom facilities at around 4 p.m. A few hours later, however, Schiazza informed the Record that the building’s running water had been completely restored.
According to Schiazza’s first email, while the restrooms in the four Greylock buildings were not operative, it was nevertheless safe for residents to stay in the buildings, as fire and smoke alarms remained functional.
Schiazza also wrote that other buildings might have been affected, asking students to inform him if they experienced disruptions in the availability of running water elsewhere.
