To the editor:

The way that we produce and consume energy is dangerously problematic. Evidence of climate change in Massachusetts is clear. Sea levels are rising, extreme weather events are occurring more frequently, and pollution-related respiratory problems are common, especially in vulnerable communities.

The good news is that there exists an alternative to fossil fuels: renewable energy from wind and solar power is inexhaustible, safe, and efficient. 

I am a student at Williams College, majoring in Environmental Studies and interning for the Student PIRGs this summer. My work is focused on promoting The Act for 100% Renewable Energy (H. 2836, Sponsored by Marjorie Decker & Sean Garballey). The Act would make MA a leader in the fight against climate change with a bold commitment to 100% renewable energy by 2045. 

I am excited about this bill because of its goal of real, permanent change to benefit our climate and for environmental justice. To achieve a livable future for ourselves and generations to come, it is imperative that we steadily transform our energy habits, starting now.

For these reasons, I call upon those with the power in this instance, Speaker of the House Bob DeLeo and Energy Committee Chair Tom Golden, to push the bill forward so that it can be passed into law before the end of the legislative session this month. They must become champions for the health and well-being of their constituents, the Commonwealth, and the planet, by supporting The Act for 100% Renewable Energy.
