Sean Sutherland ’14
Men’s swimming co-captain
Residence: Poker Flats
What’s your major?
Math and psychology.
What’s your pregame ritual?
Before NESCACs every year, I’ve made a playlist specifically for the meet. If I’ve listened to a song during a dual meet and swam really well, I make sure that song makes it on the playlist. It’s very superstitious.
What’s your most embarrassing moment in your sport?
One time I was peeing in the pool, which, if you ask any swimmer, is a standard thing for a swimmer to do. I was pretty dehydrated, but nobody was really paying attention until my assistant coach noticed while he was reading the set to us and called me out for it. I’ve been sure to hydrate ever since.
What’s your least favorite school to play at
What was an achievement in your
sport that you feel proudest about?
This year was the twelfth year in a row that we beat out Amherst for the NESCAC title. That meet has been so close all four years that I’ve been on the team, so being able to walk away with four years of being NESCAC champions feels pretty sweet.
If you could play another sport at Williams, what would it be?
Basketball. They’re like the swimmers of land sports.
What is the team tradition you value most?
We have a tradition of singing “Country Roads” by John Denver pretty much whenever we’re happy about something. We also have a tradition of ending our campus-wide parties with R. Kelly’s “Ignition (Remix)” and some Blink 182. That’s my second favorite team tradition.
Which professor would you most like to play against in your sport?
I’d challenge Professor Nicholas Stone. He’s the team’s Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.
What is the most attractive team at Williams?
The Williams Varsity Curling team, hands down.
What’s your favorite song to listen to before a race?
Most recently it’s been the Kat Krazy remix of “Sleeping with a Friend” by the Neon Trees.
Who’s your pro athlete crush?
I think Alex Morgan is beautiful.
