Women’s track looks to rookies

Women’s indoor track is gearing up for an exciting season, which will kick-off with the Smith College Winter Classic on Dec. 4.

The team’s strengths this year come from the horizontal jumps and the short sprints. All-Americans Tanasia Hoffler ’13 will lead the long and triple jumps, and Hillary Higgs ’12 will lead in the 400 meter. Also returning to the team are All-Americans Julie Paschal ’13, tri-captain Lizzy Danhakl ’11 and Jennifer Gossels ’13. Major contributions will also come from last year’s NCAA provisional qualifiers, including Brooke Johnson ’13, Karyn Moss ’12 and Jasmine Adekoya ’13.

“The team’s most significant loss from last year is hurdler Elise Johnson [’10], an NCAA runner-up in both the indoor 55m and outdoor 100m,” Assistant Coach Mitchell Baker said. Baker believes this year’s strong rookie class and improvements in different areas “could even out that substantial hit.” Two recruits who will make an immediate impact on the team are Amina Avril ’14 in weight throws and Jenna Adams ’14 in the pole vault. Also, returning Eph Annie Dear ’13 will compete in the mile this season to round out the squad’s middle distance.

The women will travel to Smith for their first meet Dec. 4.
