Diversity is relevant to alumni as well

Three cheers for the reasoned and reasonable essay by Nordia Savage ’10 (“Step Out of Your Zone,” Jan. 16) challenging us to include ourselves in the diverse cultural richness that Williams offers.

The Society of Alumni has been considering how to promote inclusion in furtherance of our goal of maintaining a strong, unified alumni community whose members all feel welcome and included. Several initiatives are underway, but one of the simplest and most effective steps we have taken is picking up the phone in order to reach out and reconnect with alumni all across the diversity spectrum.

As Savage says, “[t]here is no point in having diversity if there is no inclusion.” All of us – alumni and undergrads alike – need to “step out of our zones” and go the extra mile to make inclusiveness a vibrant reality at Williams.
