In protest of the College’s recent decision to ban smoking in dorms and within 25 feet of College buildings, I will forego my donation to the Williams Alumni Fund for the upcoming fiscal year.
Unhealthy substance use is a memorable mainstay of a collegiate lifestyle idealized by youth around the globe. Many of my fondest memories at Williams involved such substances, including and most especially, cigarettes.
Only in America are such anally retentive policies like this adopted – it is yet another telling example of nonsensical, in-your-face Puritanism gone awry. Upon hearing this, one of my Chinese co-workers put it pretty well; “America has become such a ridiculous place,” she said. I wish I could disagree, but with this decision, Williams certainly helps to prove that adage true.
