Recital showcases student talent

Brooks Rogers Recital Hall played host to fifteen student performances under the context of class recitals on April 17. The variety displayed was impressive, with pieces ranging from the Nicaraguan Folksong, “Nino Precioso,” performed by baritone Paul Holt ’02, to the tonally contrasting Brahms’ “Rhapsody, Op. 7,” performed impeccably by Yosuke Nishibayashi ’04.

The program was sparsely attended, with many audience members staying for only a few pieces.

Accomplished student symphony director Jonathan Salter ’02 on clarinet, Loren Silvertrust ’04 and Walther Chen ’02 on violin, Crystal Wei ’04 on viola and Abigail Spindel ’02 on cello opened the recital with a rousing rendition of Brahms’ “Clarinet Quintet in B Minor, Op. 115.” Kaimana Goo ’05 on piano followed with Schubert’s “Valse Sentimentele, Op. 50,” after which trumpeter Jonathan Othmer ’02 accompanied Leslie Chong ’04 on piano for Kent Kennen’s “Sonata for Trumpet and Piano.”

Other performers from the afternoon included Erin Graham ’02 on clarinet, pianist Willie Wu ’02, trumpeters Justin Brown ’05 and Roger LaRocca ’05, Marcos Gouvêa ’05 on the unusual flugelhorn, Spencer Lutchen ’05 on trombone, Karl Hein ’02 both on bass trombone and as a baritone, pianists Emily Hatch ’03 and Lindsay Taylor ’05, Corie McDermott ’04 on trumpet, Michael Wolf ’04 on the French horn, Andrew Mitchell ’02 on trombone, Christopher Holmes ’03 on tuba, pianists Becky Robinson ’05, Leigh Murnane ’04 and Jamie O’ Leary ’04, Daniel Weitraub ’05 on alto sax, and Brittany Duncan ’05 and Alaya Kuntz ’04 singing soprano.
