Nordic skiers finish strong at Colby ski carnival

The Williams College Nordic ski team headed north to the Colby carnival at Sugarloaf this past weekend, braving cold temperatures and a foot of new snow to post some impressive individual results.

The 4×5 kilometer mixed relay was held Friday morning, with two men and two women competing on each team. The first Williams team of Topher Sabot ’99, Helena Johnson ’00, Jason Lemieux ’01, and Sylvia Englund ’99 placed ninth with an overall time of 1:04:11.4. The second Williams team of P.J. Spina ’00, Elly Spensley ’01, Nick Trautz ’99, and Ellen Jacobson ’01 was close behind, coming in tenth with a time of 1:05:01.5.

Saturday’s 10K men’s freestyle race showcased strong Williams talent, with Spina leading the way for Williams in twelfth place with a time of 29:30. Spina was followed closely by Trautz, who was thirteenth in 29:33. Rounding out a deep men’s team were Lemieux (17, 30:00), Sabot (23, 30:28), Paul Kari ’98 (28, 30:48) and Ben Kamilewicz ’99 (33, 31:20).

Englund was the top finisher for Williams in Saturday’s 5K freestyle, coming in twenty-third with a time of 17:26. Johnson was thirty-third in 18:17, followed by Spensley (35, 18:24), Jacobson (36, 18:32) and Maren Eggert ’98 (41, 18:53).
